DO YOU HAVE A PLAN B?

                 
Plan BRecently a good friend, Darren Gross who produces a Commercial Real Estate Pro Network blog on Blog Talk Radio, interviewed me for one of his radio post. Darren was interested in what does an individual do now that we are at the 2/3rds mark in the year and we realize that we are not achieving the goals that we set out to accomplish at the beginning of the year.

Often we start off with a plan at the beginning of the year with good intentions of making great achievements and we arrive at this nine-month period and realize we are not on track to achieve our goals. What do we do now? Many times at the beginning of the year we set our goals and have a plan to achieve them but they are either so far out there in the future that we feel we have plenty of time, so there is no urgency to get started, or the goals are so big that we feel overwhelmed and it prevents us from getting started as well. So now that we are at this nine-month period, what do we do?

Do we abandon the plan all together or do we create a plan B.

I do not recommend abandoning the plan all together. But we must be realistic and realize that we are probably not going to accomplish the original goals so we need to recalibrate and refocus on what we can realistic accomplish in the next four months. We need a plan-B.

This new recalibration should still be a stretch, but the goals should also be accomplishable. I would recommend that we write these four-month goals down and put them in a place where we can read them everyday. This will reinforce them in our minds and our subconscious minds will go to work to help us achieve them.

We must also prevent the distractions that get in the way of us accomplishing our goals. Many of us have too many distractions and clutter in our lives that prevent us from really focusing. We must be intensely focused in order to maximize our potential results. Especially with only four months left in the year.

In my last blog post I discussed how marketing is a proactive not a reactive activity? We can’t wait around for marketing to happen, we have to make it happen. And we do that by reaching our to our customers and clients often. Communicating frequently the value we provide.

But often I find clients hesitant to send that blog post or write that article, or just get started. They want to tweak and adjust and tweak and adjust again and again their content or their message trying to make it perfect. . This continues until nothing happens and the post or article doesn’t get sent to their clients or potential clients.

Are you waiting for perfection in what you write before you send it out? Are you waiting to make that perfect video before you send it to your customers and clients? The thing about marketing is that it is better to get your message out there regularly and consistently. It doesn’t have to be perfect. This is not to say that is shouldn’t be of good or excellent quality, but it is not necessary for it to be perfect in our eyes. It’s better to get your message out there.

Communicate with your clients and customers often and consistently. It’s most likely that your competition isn’t doing this.

Recently I had a friend come out to Oregon from South Carolina to attend my annual summer party. This was the 12th year for the summer party, a fun event with a magician to entertain my guest.

I became friends with Michael about three years ago when I started this coaching and consulting business after along career as COO for a large company. Michael had been a management coach and consultant for ten years when I met him and I hired him to mentor me. We have stayed in contact during this time and became good friends as a result.

As we visited, he admitted that his business was not as successful as it had been in the past. He was very concerned. There was an interesting turn of the tables as we talked. I found myself mentoring Michael on how to grow his business. The mentee had become the mentor.

I explained to Michael that he needed to be marketing his business on a more consistent basis. Because marketing is proactive work, not reactive. It requires effort and more consistent communication with our clients and customers. We have to quit thinking we are bothering our clients and customers when we reach out to them. We are helping them to be more successful. This concept applies to all businesses, large or small. Growing our businesses takes regular and consistent communication with our clients/customers. We can’t wait for them to contact us; we must be reaching out to them. Consistently. They want to hear from us.

ARE YOU GETTING THE RESULTS THAT YOU WANT FROM YOUR BUSINESS? 

WHY NOT?

Results occur when you have clarity of direction in your business and your personal life, and you create a plan of action on how you will achieve your desired results. Without clarity you will never achieve the success you dreamed about when you started your business. Once you have that clarity, you need a plan of action on how to bridge the gap between your current state and your desired future.

I meet many business owners who want to take their businesses to the next level and can’t figure out why it’s not working. They are not getting the results they want, yet have not clarified what it is that they want the future to look like. It’s like bowling at a bowling alley with a sheet covering the pins. You don’t know where to aim, you can only guess. And guessing about the future of your business and personal life is very risky.

If you are not getting the results you want in your business, you need to look internally. If your business is doing well or not doing well it is up to you. It’s no ones fault except your own. You are 100% responsible. So take charge of your future.

In order to get the results you want, you have to think differently and get out of your comfort zone. If you are still using the same thought processes that you had when you started your businesses, you will not be able to grow it to the level you desire.

It’s like trying to grow a tree in a flowerpot. The tree will never grow to its full size. It will be dwarfed and deformed. We have to think differently.

Is Discipline Overrated?

   Discipline                    IS DISCIPLINE OVERRATED?

Absolutely not! The genus of all successful people is rooted in discipline.

I’m not talking about the kind of discipline that is synonymous with punishment, but the kind of discipline that produces the desired outcome    of an organization on a regular and continuous basis.

Aristotle said; “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit.”

World-class athletes, famous musicians, elite military teams such as the Navy Seals all have the same thing in common. They express their talents with predictable precision, which is achieved through disciplined and repeated practice. They are in the habit of practicing over and over until they get it right.

In Jim Collins book, Good to Great, he asserts that great companies have a strong culture of discipline. If discipline leads to greatness, then the lack of discipline leads to chaos, confusion and unpredictable results.

Successful people have the discipline to stay at it and work to continually improve on what they are doing. They practice the discipline of continuous improvement. they don’t give up.

Successful business owners have clarity of direction, a plan of action to bridge the gap between their current state and their desired future. They have intense focus on working this plan and they have the discipline to stay with it each and everyday, working to continually improve on the plan to achieve incredible results.

What Are You Focused On?

                Stay Focused  WHAT ARE YOU FOCUSED ON?

Once we have clarity of direction for our business and our personal life, and have created a plan of action to achieve the success we desire, we then need to develop an intense focus on the plan of action.

Many people that I run into underestimate the power of focus and the need to develop an unapologetic focus on our plan of action. We need to eliminate the distractions in our lives that prevent us from achieving success. What is the highest and best use of our time, energy and money? How can we focus on applying these assets to achieve the maximum results? We need to start thinking more strategically about our business and elevate our focus, thinking and actions to a higher level. Business as usual will not do.

The challenge is our own human nature. Over time we get distracted and become consumed with non-essential, low-priority stuff, which causes us to get overwhelmed, and then we waste our time, talent, energy and money on the wrong type of work. We get busy being busy and we lose sight of what is most important to us in our business and personal lives. As such our lives become complex, cloudy, confusing and stressful.

We all have only so much time, energy and money. Once we have a clear vision and a plan of action to take us from our current state to our desired future we need to be intensely focused on the vision and the plan to make great strides in our business. Focus is the ability to direct our thoughts, attention and action towards our desired results.

Focus is a necessary condition for outstanding performance and greater success in our business and personal lives.

Do You Have a Plan?

PlansAs I interact with business owners and CEO’s, I find that many times they have little clarity of direction as to where they want their businesses to be in the future. They are so busy being busy running day to day operations that they don’t have the time to stop and really analyze their current state and determine their desired future.

In my previous post I discussed the need for clarity of direction in order to achieve the success we are looking for. If we are unclear as to what the future of our business and personal life looks like, we will most likely not attain the desired future state.

Once we have clarity, we need to have a plan to help us reach our desired future state? We need to develop a plan of action that will move us forward towards our desired future. We can create clarity of direction but without a plan on how to achieve this desired future, it is not likely we will be able to stay on the path.

I once heard motivational speaker Brendon Burchard ask the question. “When is the best time to have a map if you are going hiking in the woods? Before we enter the woods.” This plan will be the guidepost through the woods on our journey towards our desired future.

If we want to create greater success in our business and personal life we need to first clarify where we want to be and then to create the plan of action on how we will get there.

                   Having a clear vision is critical to our success

In my last blog I admonished my readers to stop working so hard. That putting our heads down and working harder and harder isn’t the path to business success, but instead, we need to slow down and take a 30,000’ view of our businesses to determine our current state or our reality. Where are we in our business and personal life? Does it look anything like what we envisioned it would look like when we started our business? Are we where we thought we would be in our business both personally and professionally?

Once we have a clear idea of our current state, what does the desired future look like for our business and our personal life. And I do stress, both personally and professionally. We need to consider both. It’s not like we have a business life or don’t have a business life, or that we have a personal life or we don’t have a personal life. We have a life, and more often than not the two are enter-twined.

In order to see clearly, we need to determine what we want our future to look like. We need to create a vision of the future, 5-years from today. I discussed working backwards from five-years, to three-years, then to one-year. What does the future of our business and personal life look like? If we are not clear and don’t determine where we want to be in our business and personal life, it is very unlikely that we will attain the desired results.

Success in business and our personal life starts with a clear vision. We need to be proactive in order to change our current state into our desired future. It’s not likely to fall into our lap. So dream big, be bold, think amazing and visualize the future. We are the roots of our own success. Imagine the future state and write it down.

This can be your greatest year ever, but it starts with clarity of direction. Seeing clearly where it is you want to go professionally and personally.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO WORK SO DARN HARD TO MAKE YOUR BUSINESS A

So many business owners and executives today are working harder and harder, running on the treadmill of life that just goes faster and faster, and they can’t work any harder or run any faster.

We don’t have to work harder and harder to make our business a success. Putting our head down and plodding along hoping that it will change is not a good strategy. So stop it. Stop thinking that if you just work harder and harder your business will improve.

In order to do that, we may need to slow down. This may sound counter intuitive, but we need to slow down and step away from our busyness and take a 30,000’ view of our business. What does it look like? What is our current state? What is our current reality?

Then you need to decide what you want your business to look like in the future. What would you like your business to look like five years from now? Then work backwards. If this is your desired future five years out, what must your business look like in three years? Then in order to attain the three-year vision, where must your business be one year from today?

This is clarity of direction, a vision of the future. This is the first step in my Business Growth Acceleration Loop that can dramatically improve your success and has helped my clients achieve 30% to over 300% improvements in their business success.
